The Day in Review
It's been a long day, and games are still going on, but enough has happened to start reviewing.
Injury News:
- Pete warned that the injury to Ryan Zimmerman would decrease his value as he played through it, and apparently the Nats agreed, placing the third basemen on the DL.
- Albert Pujols left with a tightened calf, presumably brought on during the rain delay. It's worth monitoring given his history, but most of the perennial All Star injury risk has been mitigated by the Cardinal's success thus far.
- Carl Crawford's knee injury warranted an MRI, which in turn showed no damage. He should be back on Wednesday.
Notable Performances
- It had been a month since he pitched, but Wandy Rodriguez's return against the Pirates looked ideal, and turned out to be. He got the winning, throwing six shut out innings while striking out three.
- Joba Chamberlain, whose absence from the bullpen arguably cost the Yankees a hold last night against the Twins, couldn't get the job done against Toronto in his first start. Sixty-two pitches got him through two and third innings, though he only gave up one earned run (2 altogether). Maybe his overenthusiastic owner has buyer's remorse and will sell him cheap? It's worth the risk, since his control issues will likely straighten out with more confidence.
- Pedro Martinez started strong, but gave up his second and third runs during the fifth inning. I expect he's done after throwing 90 pitches, but is at least in line for the win. One strikeout is cause for disappointment and if it continues, cause for alarm.
- Zack Greinke got rocked for eight runs over six. He's been inconsistent this year, especially recently, and you should have him on your trading block.
- Keeping in line with pitching news, Dontrelle Willis won't get the win. He used 70 pitches to get through four innings, walking four but giving up no runs. I've added him in case he figures things out, but honestly don't expect him to.
- Jeff Francis pitched well. If it happens next start, its possible he will be worth owning. Until then, don't think much of it.
That's what you need to know about the day.

Just wanted to update the news on Pedro. The Mets allowed him to pitch another inning, in which he gave up two hits, but no runs, and struck out two. Those strikeouts were big at the time, so it was an encouraging inning.
