The Day in Review
It was a beautiful day to be outside today and a beautiful day for baseball. Here are the developments in the past 24 hours.
Injury News
- Jeremy Bonderman has a blood clot in his axillary vein. He just had surgery to get it removed and is finished for the season.
- Jake Westbrook, one of Bonderman's Central Division-rivals, will have Tommy John surgery soon. He, too, is finished for 2008.
- In better news, Vernon Wells is back and should be in the lineup tomorrow for the desperate Blue Jays. Also, it looks like the news on Guerrero was a little extreme, because his MRI was negative. He should make his way back to the Los Angeles outfield in the near future.
Notable Performances
- In looking at my days, I find I tend to be slightly hitter-biased. So I'll start with the Yanks/Royals, who scored a combined 23 runs. A-Rod hit his ninth home run (he looks like he's making up for lost time), but it's Johnny Damon's 6-for-6 with a run, 4 RBI and a steal that I'd like to mention. Jose Guillen's 2-HR, 7 RBI day was also stellar. For those of you who spot-started Andy Pettitte, I'm very sorry.
- For those who took our advice and spot-started Wakefield, pat yourselves on the back. He struck out 6 while giving up two runs in seven against Seattle. Also in this game, Manny had a HR and 3 BB, while Ichiro stole his 26th of the season.
- Jonathan Sanchez also delivered, with seven shutout innings against the Nats and the win.
- Chipper Jones hit his 15th HR and stole a base, though his 1-for-3 day dropped his batting average.
- Joe Crede hit two HR for the second straight night, driving in six and helping Mark Buehrle (8 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 4 K) win his third.
This has been an incredibly long edition, but... That's what you need to know about the day.
