The Day in Review

So it's early, but there's already lots of news to report. And frankly, none of it is good. Don't shoot me - I'm just the messenger!

Injury News
  • Alfonso Soriano is expected to miss six weeks after getting hit by a pitch against Atlanta. After all the promise, he has a broken hand.
  • From bad to worse - Albert Pujols hurt, not his elbow, but his calf! He pulled up lame coming out of the batter's box and is expected to miss three weeks. It was definitely sad to see his teammates carrying him off the field.
  • Victor Martinez left the game with elbow inflammation. They say it's not too serious, but it won't help him hit home runs anytime soon.
  • Ryan Zimmerman is going to be out another 4-6 weeks, at least. He's barely worth a DL spot at this point, because you can't expect A-Rod numbers when he returns.

Notable Performances
  • Bad news continuing... Billy Wagner is mortal! After giving up one run in April and May combined, he blew the save tonight after giving up a HR in the ninth.
  • In the department of better news, Dan Uggla did hit a walk-off grand slam to lead the Marlins over the Phillies. Teammate Jorge Cantu hit two more homers, and apparently has 14 on the year.
  • Bartolo Colon struck out seven in six strong innings for Boston. He's slowly but surely working back into form. Ryan Dempster struck out 11 en route to a complete game, Braden Looper threw a complete game shutout for his eighth win for St. Louis, and Justin Verlander threw a complete game for Detroit (finally a good sign??). Finally, Cole Hamels struck out 13 in eight innings, but was denied the win by Uggla and Cantu.

We saw some stellar pitching today, but the losses of both Pujols and Soriano will hurt most fantasy teams, badly. Try to get Vlad and Ryan Howard while you still can, that's my best advice! That's what you need to know about the day.
