Pedro Signs...Feliz That Is

Another slow week for baseball; however, things might be picking up again. In the news recently is the Erik Bedard to Seattle deal picking up life again, and news that the Twins may be trying to deal Santana within the next week or so. However, since none of that has actually happened, we’ll cover that later. This week’s news is minor, but could have an impact in the future.

Pedro Feliz signed on to play 3b or the Phillies. This guy plays great defense but most people say he cant hit a lick. However, if a guy can hit 20 HR in San Francisco, he might be able to hit 30 in Philadelphia. Granted those 30 HR might come with a .230 batting average and an OBP under .290 (which was his OBP last season), but he might be a decent source of power. In reality I’d stay away from him until after the season starts. If he is hot to start the season make a waiver claim on him, but I wouldn’t waste a draft pick on him, there are plenty of other high risk high reward guys available at the end of a draft.

Rumor has it that Brandon Inge has told the Tigers that he is willing to move back to the catcher position. Right now he would be backing up Ivan Rodriguez, however, Pudge is in the final year of his deal. If Inge plays a utility role this season, giving miggy a few days off, backing up Rodriguez and filling in at a corner outfield spot now and then, and is eventually given the starting C job for the 2009 season, he could be a steal. A 20 HR catcher who can hit for a decent average can be a valuable asset. In deep keeper leagues I think he could be worth a flyer. The smarter thing to do however would be to let him sit on FA, sit back and see exactly what his role will be. He could pick up C and OF eligibility in some leagues this year along with 3b. Which means if there is an injury in Detroit, his value could jump. Late in the season, if it looks like Inge will take over the C job the following year, pick him up and consider him for one of your keepers.

- Be advised, the Yanks are continuing to try and limit Joba’s innings this up coming season. This means he might start the year in the bullpen again. This will hurt his value this season in leagues not counting Holds. You never know, if their bullpen is still that bad, they may be forced to keep him in a set up role, as it might be more beneficial to the team.
- Mike Sweeney apparently interests the Padres. This is no real news here fantasy wise. Even if he does sign here and find playing time its not a good hitters park. On top of that Adrian Gonzalez is filling the 1b spot nicely and the NL doesn’t use a DH. Odds are if he does sign here he doesn’t get enough at bats, and he’ll still get hurt.
- Bartolo Colon is looking for a multi-year deal. Problem is, nobody is willing to give that to him, not yet at least. He was reportedly throwing in the 87-89 range during winter league, and that has made teams weary of signing him to any contract longer than one season and incentive laden. Possible suitors remain to be the Royals and the White Sox, with the Mets having a distant interest.
